You are hereby invited to attend a workshop that presents the project “Nature Conservation and Conflict in Ukraine: Determining War Damages to Nature Reserves in Ukraine”, held online 13 September 2022.
The Research and Transfer Centre “Sustainable Development and Climate Change Management” at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is currently undertaking the project “Nature Conservation and Conflict in Ukraine: Determining War Damage to Nature Reserves in Ukraine” (“Ukraine Nature”). This is supported by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt).
Since the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces in February 2022, the world’s attention has focused on the country’s heavily shelled cities. But Ukraine, which is located in an ecological transition zone, is also home to vibrant wetlands and forests, as well as a large area of pristine steppe. Many military operations have been affecting protected natural areas, damaging ecosystems and negatively impacting not only fauna and flora, but also the livelihoods of many people.
Against this background, the project “Ukraine Nature” will study and profile the damages to protected areas (e.g. national parks, biological reserves) in Ukraine, and will map the extent of the damages. The aim is to generate valuable data that will be useful for future reconstruction efforts.
The project team would like to invite BUP colleagues working with protected areas, and experts working in the field of water and soil contamination, as well as GIS, to attend the event. The project team will present the project, and then there will be a discussion regarding opportunities for collaboration.
